Asthma
My son cannot tolerate cold drinks. The moment he
drinks a little of it, he starts coughing immediately. Whenever I do dusting
work at home, the next day my child is down with breathlessness. Going to a
party is really a sorry feeling for him. He just cannot eat anything and has to
only observe the others enjoying it. These are common remarks heard by doctors.
When taken to the doctor, he is labeled as ‘allergic’
or ‘allergy prone’. Hearing this word you feel like being pushed miles apart.
But does every individual suffer from an allergy? Does
every individual have to put restrictions on themselves? What is the reason for
it? What is an allergy?
Allergy is the hypersensitive (abnormal) response
to an allergen otherwise harmless to the body. This means that certain
substances like milk
and other dairy products, eggs, wheat, peanuts and seafood, dust, pollens
which are harmless to a normal individual, triggers the immune response in
allergic individuals. The body treats these harmless substances as harmful and
initiates the immune system to produce antibodies which in turn releases
chemicals like histamine into the bloodstream. The histamine then acts on a person's eyes, nose,
throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract and causes the symptoms of the
allergic reaction.
An individual is born disease-free. Our body and
immune responses are made in such a way that the balance between them drives
away any harmful or toxic agents thus maintaining the balance or homeostasis
inside.
Then why, when and how does allergy occur?
An allergy occurs when the immune system fighting
against the allergen is reduced. The body’s immune system no longer has the
strength to fight the attack of the foreign substance.
Allergies may manifest on the skin, gastrointestinal
tract or the respiratory system. The respiratory passage starts from the nose
and terminates in the lung. Throughout the respiratory passage there is a mucus
lining that allows the smooth functioning of the passage. The air entry is
smooth. In an allergic individual the moment the allergen comes in contact with the respiratory passage lining, it
causes irritation. As a reaction inflammation occurs. The disturbed
respiratory lining secretes excessive mucus. As a result of the increased mucus
secretion and inflammation, the passage is narrowed. Also, the muscles
surrounding the passage go into spasm because of inflammation. The narrowed
respiratory passage causes turbulence of air and creates a whistling sound. It
is called wheezing.

We say an allergy or an allergic response occurs
when the immunity of the individual is decreased. The introduction of a foreign
protein into the body causes an imbalance in the homeostasis. When this
homeostasis is disturbed, the immunity is lowered and the individual falls
sick.
Emotional turbulences like anger, grief, fright, etc.
cause secretion of neurotransmitters in the body. These neurotransmitters are
protein in character and their release causes a disturbance in the internal
protein balance thus making the individual susceptible to illness.
Vaccines are also foreign proteins. When a child is
vaccinated, his immunity to a specific disease increases but in the bargain the
general immunity is lowered thus making the child susceptible to other illnesses.
We say certain individuals suffer while certain
others do not from the same stimulus. It means an individual must be
predisposed in order to fall sick. This predisposition is in the genes. The
genetic code is hereditarily determined therefore family history plays an important
role. The information is stored in the form of the genetic code and is dormant.
The moment it gets the stimulus it is thrown out.
HOMOEOPATHY TREATS THE DISEASE EXACTLY AT THE GENETIC
LEVEL. It tries to tackle the individual from all sides. It takes a long time,
a long history for each patient because the individual’s physical
characteristics, mental behavior, habits, mode of living have to be taken into
consideration to remove the disease from its roots.
The right remedy prescribed after taking the
individual as a whole into account re-establishes the equilibrium bringing him back
to health. It strengthens the immunity, thus allowing the body to fight
strongly against any invading agent.
In Allopathy, patients are advised to avoid the allergens
causing allergy in them. But in homeopathy, all the allergic agents are being
taken care of and finally, the individual is freed from allergy completely.
Thus as the treatment progresses we find not only
the physical symptoms disappearing but changes at the level of mind, body and
soul. Holistic healing takes place, with a new blooming personality full of
confidence ever to live and love life again.
